I want to start off by saying how proud I am to be a part of this organization. Sometimes, in our profession, women end up pushing other women down. One of the things I love about MAAWLE is the culture of realizing that the best way to succeed as a woman in this profession is to help one another - the same way we are committed to helping the citizens we serve. What I love even more is seeing humble, accomplished, and always improving women rise through the ranks. There have been several recent promotions, so congratulations to all of you for your well deserved new positions.
Additionally, there are new retirements being announced - and that's an incredible reminder for all of us to evaluate where we are in our careers. We only get one go-around on this globe, so let's make sure we're doing our best to stay the course and make sure we are doing the things we will be proud of on the day we decide to hang it up and look back on it all. When we stray from that and back off from preparing for the promotion, pushing ourselves out of our comfort zone, or putting off working on work/life balance, lets do our best to set up guardrails for ourselves and adjust our trajectories. For the MAAWLE women who have recently retired or have retirements quickly approaching - I know you've practiced this advice and have made the most of your careers, and we are SO PROUD OF YOU! Now you get to join our Diamond League and pass on your wisdom to those of us who tend to learn lessons the hard way!
Lastly, we all have today. I'm sure many of you can empathize with me when I say I've been through many different seasons of my career. Sometimes I've been motivated to a fault and put too much stock/weigh/pressure on my career aspirations. Sometimes I've backed off too much and been a little (maybe more than a little) jaded. Sometimes I've found balance, but I usually don't manage to stay there too long. Sometimes I get too wrapped up reflecting on the past and figuring out every possible course for the future. Today, join me in taking a moment to assess where I'm at, what my motivators are, and what I want to accomplish today.
